Obituary

Elton "Al" Uhrig, 90 of Lead, passed away on January 8, 2018 at the Ft. Meade VA Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Al was born on June 2, 1927 the fifth of twelve children to Myron and Bertha (Bockerney) Uhrig in Grant County, ND. After attending school in Morristown, he enlisted in the US Navy and like his four older brothers proudly served in WWII on the Pacific Theater in Okinawa.

After returning from the Navy he married Agnes "Aggie" Adsem on June 25, 1949 in Hettinger, ND. The family moved to Morristown, SD and ran a ranch for Jim Lemmon in Grant County, ND where five of their six children were born. The family moved to Lead, SD in 1959 where Al went to work at Homestake Mine for 26 years retiring as shift supervisor in 1985.

After retirement Al and Aggie spent the next 20 plus years wintering in Apache Junction, AZ, learning how to "desert golf" and traveling to many fishing holes including Alaska, Canada, the tip of Russia, the Great Lakes, Baja Mexico, paddle fishing in Montana and any walleye pond west of the Missouri. Al also loved to dance, watch boxing, many crafting projects and was an amazing handyman. He was a very active member of the VFW Post 5969 serving as Post Commander in 1972 and 1990.

Al is survived by his wife, Aggie of Lead; sons, Bruce (Kathy) Uhrig of Rapid City, Greg (Ramona) Uhrig of Wheatland, WY and Doug (Shano) Uhrig of Rock Springs, WY; daughters, Linda (Donald) Quenzer of Central City and Laura Uhrig of Deadwood; grandchildren, Bruce (Deb) Uhrig II, Ann (Kevin) Vaughn, Ryan Uhrig, Logan (Jill) Uhrig, Tanya (Coy) Horton; Denise (Doug) Laudenslager, Michael Uhrig, Christopher Uhrig, Nicholas Uhrig, Nathan (Jenni) Uhrig, Niki Uhrig, Lucas (Andrea) Uhrig, Blake Uhrig, Lynn Uhrig II, Jacob Quenzer, Jessica Quenzer, Tanya (Stanley) Pzinski, Zach (Melinda) Barrett, Karmen Barrett and Jilllian (Jayson) McLaughlin; 30 great-grandchildren; siblings, Joan Sharp of Summerset, SD, Jim (Marlene) Uhrig of Pierre, SD and Bill Uhrig of Sydney, NE. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Lynn Uhrig; siblings, Edmund "Ed" Uhrig, Henry "Hank" Uhrig, John Uhrig, Alfred "Skeeze" Uhrig, Marian "Mike" Uhrig, Elaine "Sis" O'Donnell, Shirlene "Tootie" Piekkola and Myra Jane "Baby" Licking.

Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lead. Burial will follow with full military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery.
