Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" (Fassbender) Johnson, 92 of Spearfish died Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare in Spearfish.
Born in Faith, SD, May 23, 1923, to Josef and Magdalena "Lena" (Mengenhauser) Fassbender, Betty came to Spearfish as an infant. As a resident of Spearfish for 92 years, she graduated from SHS in 1941 then worked in the family business, Black Hills Studio Inc, until 1946 when she married Mark Elmer Johnson in Washington where he was serving in the U.S. Navy. Betty and Elmer moved back to Spearfish and were active in the Spearfish Fire Department, American Legion Post 164, and, after opening Elmer's Downtown Service, the Chamber of Commerce. She also returned to the Studio to keep the accounting. After Elmer's death in 1966, Betty became the first woman Mobil dealer in the company's history. Betty loved league bowling and spending time with friends and family. She sewed constantly, mastering the arts of hardanger, cross-stitch, and crochet, as well as china painting. Many were blessed to receive gifts from her talents. She was devoted to the Blessed Virgin saying 18 rosaries a day for her family.
Betty is survived by daughter Carol and Tom Sprigler, grandchildren Lisa (Sprigler) and Rob Condon, Tom and Sally Sprigler, Mark and Denelle Sprigler, Julianne (Sprigler) and Chris Zoller, her great-grandchildren Zach and Jessi Condon, Sean Condon, Taylor Condon, Tessa Sprigler, Jobi Sprigler, Madalen Sprigler, Michael Merxbauer, Chelsea Rhoads, Rose Sprigler, Cody Clausen, Norah Zoller, and Ava Zoller, sister-in-law JoAnn Fassbender, and nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Julie Noonan, and brothers; Josef Fassbender (infant), Henry Fassbender, William "Bill" Fassbender, and George Fassbender.
Vigil and rosary services will be held at 7:00pm, Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, funeral mass will take place at 11:00am, Thursday, May 5, 2016 at All Angels Episcopal Church in Spearfish. Inurnment will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery.
