Effie A. Lee, 100, of Spearfish, died Sunday, July 17, 2011, at the Belle Fourche Health Care Center.
Effie was born August 9, 1910 in Hardwick, MN, the youngest child of Edward and Ellen (Erickson) Johnson. She attended school in Hardwick and Luverne, MN. In 1928, she went to stay with her brother, Edwin, in Carthage, SD, where she met Morlan Lee. The couple married in 1930. In 1933, the couple, with their daughter, Jean, moved to the Lead area, where Morlan worked for Homestake Mining Company. A second daughter, Sharon, was born while living in the Lead area. In 1951, they moved to Rapid City and in 1958, they moved to Springfield, MN. Morlan passed away in 1977 and Effie continued to live there until moving to Spearfish in 1990.
She was a member of the Spearfish Senior Center, an avid bridge player and enjoyed many other card games.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean (Alvin) Dyer of Spearfish and Sharon Markowitz of Girard, OH, eight grandchildren; Trudy (Dan) Regan, Deb (Arni) Olson, David Dyer, Bill (Janice) Markowitz, Nancy Bartlomain and Ron (De), Doug and Paul (Kirk) Markowitz, fourteen great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, brothers, Edwin (Lucille) Johnson, Chris (Reka) Johnson and sister Mabel (Roger) Williams, great grandson Stephen Markowitz, and Mary Ellen Markowitz, wife of grandson Ron.
Memorial Services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Inurnment will be later this week at Pleasant View Cemetery in Carthage, SD. A memorial has been established to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead and the Pleasant View Cemetery in Carthage. Condolences may be sent to 310 Oriole Drive, Spearfish, SD 57783.
