Obituary

Edwin G. Tieszen, 91, formerly of Lead, SD, left the world Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born to Gerhard and Anna (Dick) Tieszen in the rural Canistota, SD, area. He was baptized under the Bethesda Mennonite Church.

Edwin wed Emma Kleinsassar in October 1941. To this union 2 children were born. Edwin went to serve his country during World War II as a private first class in the Middle Eastern theatre serving under the 102nd infantry division of OZARK Company A 327 medical battalion. While in service he was awarded the bronze star for going above and beyond the call of duty. He received an honorable discharge December 1945. Returning to the states he farmed in the Freeman, SD, area until 1956. He then made his home in Lead. He was employed with Homestake Mining Company until 1959. Edwin then found his passion for logging. He logged throughout the Black Hills area. After his retirement in 1982 he worked for the city of Lead under the green thumb program, he continued to log with his friends, known as Senior Citizen Loggers. He was a caregiver to his wife Emma for many years, along with being a devoted husband, father, grandfather and ol' papa. He enjoyed visiting with people. Edwin also helped trace the history of the Dick and Kleinsassar family along with his automobile books.

Edwin is survived by his children, Sherwin and Mary (Schurring) Tieszen of Lesterville, SD, and Linda and Clifford Rook of Gillette, WY, 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, brother David and Marylou of Canistota, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Emma, parents, one brother and five sisters.

Edwin had a lot of useful and useless information and his favorite saying was "Oh my aching back." The man with two sticks will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
