Edna Grieb, 98, died March 8, 2010 at Dorsett Regional Senior Care where
she had resided for the last two years.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the Spearfish Masonic Temple. With burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials are to the Shriner's Hospitals or the donors choice.
Edna V. Grieb was born on July 3,1911 to Ed and Beulah (Torrence) Vopat on her parents homestead in Crook County, Wyoming. She lived on the homestead until 1922 when the family moved to Spearfish, South Dakota. She graduated from Spearfish High School and went to nurses training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Deadwood, South Dakota, and worked there for a time after graduation. Over the next few years, she worked for Dr. Smiley in Deadwood, then returned to work in the lab at St. Joseph's, and later at the lab at Ft. Meade Veterans Hospital, Sturgis SD. She returned to school at Black Hills State College, Spearfish SD and the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley CO where she earned a teaching degree. Edna taught chemistry at Black Hills State College until her retirement. After her retirement she participated in many activities for seniors including defensive driving instruction.
She married William F. Grieb on June 6, 1931 in Spearfish. They lived in Deadwood until after they both retired, spending winters in Green Valley, Arizona and summers in Deadwood. Edna continued spending winters in Arizona but moved to Spearfish after William died.
She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and received recognition for 75 years of membership.
Edna is survived by her brother Buster Vopat, Spearfish and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, her parents, sister Hazel Lloyd, and brother Earl Vopat.
