Obituary

Edna M. Dietrich, 97, Spearfish, formerly from Mobridge, SD, went home to her Lord on April 20, 2011, after living a fulfilling life.

She grew up in the German Lutheran home of Jacob and Christine (Hertel) Schlaht with 4 brothers and 5 sisters. In 1935, she married Julius Dietrich and they started building a life together, working hard to build up the Flying X Ranch near Kenel, SD. Edna had many talents, from stacking hay, milking cows, raising chickens, pigs, cooking huge meals during roundups and branding, planting a beautiful yard and garden and canning produce. She did all kinds of crafts, knitted many sweaters for grandchildren and family, was a seamstress, crocheted many beautiful doilies, self-taught pianist and organist, and played for church. She started the Jolly Rancherettes Extension Club with neighboring country ladies becoming members. Grandma and Grandpa's house on the ranch was always the gathering place for all the holiday gatherings and grandchildren's' birthday get-togethers. Jules and Edna moved to Mobridge in 1974, selling the ranch to youngest son, Dale.

Edna belonged to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge and Quilters Club. She had the gift of hospitality. The coffee and cookies were always ready for visitors. She was the M & M grandma, the jar was always full. In 2007, Edna moved from Mobridge to an assisted living in Spearfish and then in September of 2010, she moved to Dorsett Nursing Home, where she left this earth and went to heaven.

Survivors are, her children, Wayne (Jan) Dietrich, Hermosa, SD; Marlene (Don) Howe, Spearfish, SD; and Dale (Joann) Dietrich, Rio Verde, Mexico; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; Herman (Tillie) Schlaht, Snoqaulmie, WA and Mel (Marianne) Schlaht, Aberdeen, SD and Mesa, AZ.

Edna is preceded in death by her husband, Julius, in 1994; granddaughter, Mary Martha Dietrich in 1966; her parents; 2 brothers, Jacob and Norman; and 5 sisters, Bertha, Alvina, Tina, Virginia and Ramon.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, September 4, 2010, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 1020 State Street, Spearfish, SD. Graveside rites will be at 1:00 P.M., Monday, September 5, 2010 at the North Cemetery, McLaughlin, SD.
