Douglas Gene "Doug" Rans, 79 of Spearfish, SD, passed away at Custer Regional Senior Care on June 23, 2017.

Doug was born in Sioux Falls, SD on June 27, 1937. He attended school in Huron, SD, graduating in 1955. Doug enlisted in the United States Air Force and was initially assigned to a duty station in Albany, Georgia. He served his last year of duty in Iceland.

Doug married Julie Ann Cox of Huron, SD on December 21, 1957. The couple made their home in Albany, GA where they welcomed their new son, Michael, into the world. When Doug was discharged from the service the family moved to Watertown, SD. Doug sold insurance for National Mutual while living there. In Watertown their daughter, Melinda Marie, was born.

The family relocated to Aberdeen, SD where Doug went to work for Jewett Drug Wholesalers. Doug traveled on the road selling pharmaceuticals. The family later moved to Spearfish, and in 1982 Doug made the decision to stop travelling. He purchased the Silver Dollar Bar in Spearfish. Doug sold the bar in 2003 and he decided it was time to retire.

Doug is survived by Julie, his loving wife of 59 years; his son Michael and daughter Melinda; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00am on June 28, 2017 at Countryside Church in Spearfish, SD. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

A memorial has been established for the Countryside Church building fund.
