Dorraine "Shirley" (Steen) Lamb, 92 of Spearfish died Friday, April 8, 2016 at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center.
Dorraine "Shirley" Lamb was born February 13, 1924 in Clark County, S.D. to Nels and Angilee Steen. Her father's family came from Norway in 1883. Her mother's family, the Cherringtons, had come from England. She had one sibling, a brother named Edwin, who was four years older.
Shirley grew up on the family farm during the Great Depression. She remembered her family suffering through extremely poor crops and no rain or mud throughout the "Dirty Thirties." Shirley loved her Shetland pony, Buddy. Even when he would find a way to send the cart she was riding in flying and launch her with it, she defended Buddy as being "so kind and good."
Shirley graduated high school and studied at Northern State Teachers College, later Northern State University, in Aberdeen to become a teacher. She taught country school in eastern South Dakota. In May, 1944, she married John Lamb. The couple had seven children. Their first, a daughter named Madeline, died in infancy. Over the next 13 years, Shirley gave birth to six boys, who would produce 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
The family moved across the state to Spearfish in 1955. Shirley was deeply involved in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, helping with Ruth Circle, and in other local clubs such as the Lower Valley Extension Club. She loved to cook and bake. She served as an aide at the Dorsett Home, where she eventually lived at the end of her life.
John and Shirley spent much of their later years travelling. They traveled across the U.S. and Europe. They also made their home welcome to family, especially the grandchildren. Most of the grandchildren remember having stayed for periods of time with Grandma and Grandpa. Shirley's knowledge of the Lamb and Steen families and their history was well-known. She knew every distant cousin and who was who and how each person was related to the next. Her love and devotion to her family will be missed by all.
Shirley is survived by her children; Allen (Barb) Lamb of Nisland, Robert (Annette) Lamb of Nisland, Roger (Sheila) Lamb of Texas, Rodney (Sandy) Lamb of Rapid City and Donald Lamb of Spearfish, 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, infant daughter Madeline, son Darwin, and granddaughter Kimberly.
Funeral services will be at 11:00am, Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
