Dorothy Marie Riggs, 93, long-time resident of Spearfish, died peacefully on May 24, 2010 in Creswell, Oregon. Dorothy was born June 23, 1916 near Brunswick, Nebraska to Sophie and Arthur K. Frost. She married Clarence Riggs in Brunswick, NE on March 3, 1935.
Dorothy graduated from Brunswick High School in 1933. She was employed at retail stores in Lead and Deadwood. She later kept the books for the family farm and Clarence's, sawmill business. She was also Clarence's partner in the wood moulding business, dry kiln business, family shoe store, and campground business.
She enjoyed reading, writing, crafts, needlework, baking, and traveling.
Dorothy was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Foothills Extension Club, Mothers' Club, and served as a 4-H leader. As a member of the United Church of Christ in Spearfish, she served on church boards, taught Sunday School, and participated in women's fellowship.
Survivors include her two sons, Clarence (Keith), Pennedepie, France, Charles, Portland, OR; two daughters, Peggy Steffel, Port St. Lucie, FL, and June Harvey, Creswell, OR; 13 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Clarence and a loving son Ron.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00P.M. on June 30, 2010 at the United Church of Christ in Spearfish.
