Dorothy was born on April 23, 1933, to Benjamin and Doris (LaFurge) Husted. She had two brothers, Donald and Roger, and one sister, Wilma. She was born in Iowa, but grew up in Hyde and Hughes counties finally settling on the ranch south of Harrold, SD. After high school, she attended Black Hills Teacher's College. After graduation, she taught in one-room schoolhouses in central SD. On August 19, 1956, she married Robert Gadd and then moved to the Gadd Ranch south of Highmore, SD. She was an avid bowler, winning several trophies and also worked as a bookkeeper at the Highmore Nursing Home for several years.
In 1981, the family moved to Fort Pierre, SD, and there Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper for Brad Clark Electric. She was an active member of the United Church of Christ both in Fort Pierre and Spearfish. After Robert's retirement, they loved to travel in their Winnebago with their cat, Abby. They were able to visit many places before Robert's sudden passing in 2005, including spending winters in McAllen, TX with friends. Dorothy spent her last years at Burr's Tender Care Assisted Living Facility in Spearfish. She enjoyed visits from family and talking to fellow residents.

She enjoyed spending time with her two grandchildren, Riley Kuhl of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Connor Kuhl of Spearfish, SD. She is also survived by a brother, Roger Husted (Delores) of Harrold, SD, a special niece Pandora Kusser (Rod) and numerous other nephews, nieces and friends.
