Obituary

Doris Eaton Shipley, 100, Spearfish, SD died January 27, 2014 at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.

Doris was born January 7, 1914 in Belle Fourche, SD, daughter of Thomas W. and Rosa (Hall) Eaton. She was the oldest of three children, one sister having died in infancy and one brother, Lloyd Eaton.

She grew up on the family farm six miles east of Belle Fourche, and attended grade school in rural schools both at Ingersoll and Fruitdale. She graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1931, and attended Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell for two years, receiving her South Dakota State Teacher's Certificate in 1933. The next four years were spent in teaching in Butte County rural schools at Empire east of Vale and at Horse Creek west of Newell.

In June of 1937 she was married to Herman Shipley of Belle Fourche. They made their home there where he was in business until 1942. Following their return from World War II service the family moved to Newell, where Herman established his service station business.

Doris began teaching again in Newell in 1956, following several years of being "on call" as a substitute teacher, and taught for eight years in the Newell school system. Here both sons graduated from High School.
In 1964 a move was made to Spearfish, where she returned to college to do final work on her degree in education with a minor in library science, which she received from Black Hills State College in 1965. That fall she became librarian for Spearfish Junior-Senior High School, a position she held for the next fifteen years, until her retirement in 1980.

Her interest in library work began with an appointment to the town library board in Newell and later an appointment to the Butte County Library Board, which positions she held for many years.
She grew up in the early years of 4H and was a member of cooking, sewing and canning clubs. As an adult she gave several years of her time to being a leader in homemaking clubs in the Newell area.

Since retirement from 30 years of teaching and teaching related positions, the couple busied themselves with their interests and hobbies. They traveled extensively, visiting most areas of the United States. They served on many projects connected with the Senior Citizens and Retired Teacher Organizations and Butte County Historical Society.
Beta Sigma Phi, a social sorority had been an interest of hers and a big part of her life. She held many offices in the different chapters and was a past president of two.

Her membership in the Order of Eastern Star began in 1938. In that Order she held various offices, and served with her husband as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron of the Newell O.E.S. Chapter in 1953 and 1954. After that time she was a member of Past Matron's Club of Newell and Spearfish.

She was invited to join Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society of Women Teachers, and served as president of Iota Chapter (Northern Hills Group) in 1974-1976.

She was a lifetime member of the Congregational –United Church of Christ Church, serving in the many areas of the church from teacher, church school superintendent and church boards. She was an active member of the Women's Fellowship and served as chairman of the group.
