Donald Oldham Wohlhueter, 61, of Lead, died on Tuesday, May 26 at Angostura Reservoir. He spent his last day at his favorite fishing spot doing what he loved most. Don was born on February 16, 1954 in Belle Fourche, SD to Robert and Elizabeth (Fox) Wohlhueter.
Don attended school in Rapid City and graduated from Rapid City Central in 1972. He was involved in music and sports. Any sport Don was involved in, he excelled at. His love of the game and dedication to the team showed in all of his sports which included: football, basketball, track and baseball. He lettered in all of his sports by his junior year. He played shortstop for Rapid City Post 22 and attended BHSU to play baseball.
Don married Ramona (Zoll) Janssen on September 2, 1980. To this marriage were born daughters, Cassidy and Brandy. Don spent many memorable days with his daughters camping, fishing and hunting. He took great pride in his girls and their accomplishments.
Don was a craftsman working at construction, building log homes and creating Black Hills Gold jewelry.
Don married the love of his life, Becky Binder, on September 15, 2012. The two of them met in in 1970 and were high school sweethearts. They parted ways when Don left to play baseball in college but always kept in touch. The flame reignited with a dream, a phone call, and a Rush game. They picked up right where they left off and were inseparable. Their love story is one that most only dream of.
Don is survived by his wife, Becky; daughters, Cassidy Wohlhueter (Landy Benbo), Brandy (Andy) Maguire; step-son, Ben (Jordan) Bartling; grandchildren: Lauren and Weiland Benbo, Brayden and Ayla Maguire and Brayli Bartling; sister, Roberta Ayala; brother, Jack (Ione) Wohlhueter; sister-in-law, Linda Wohlhueter; and many nieces and nephews, his fishing and hunting buddies and sports teammates.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dennis Wohlhueter.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 1, at the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead. A celebration of Donny's life will follow at the Knuckle Brewing Company in Sturgis, SD. Please join us in laughing and telling stories Donny style.
