Obituary

Donald James Rehm was born July 12, 1934, in Queens, New York to Adam and Florence Rehm. He was the youngest of five brothers.

Don, or "Poppy" as most knew him, was a warm and kind person. Anybody that knew him though, knew he loved to tease-perhaps from having four older brothers! Although he kept a small circle of friends, along with his family, all knew him as warm and loving with all he kept close.

As a youth he started out as a bell boy for the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City, but his life would take him all over the country, and particularly to Panama, where he served in the US Army. There, he would also meet the love of his life, Dorothy, and they would settle back in New York, and have their two children, Richard, and Russell. They would eventually move to southern California, before settling in Spearfish in August of 1977.

Don finished his working years at Homestake Gold Mine, which he was particularly proud of. His workmates all earned nicknames. Don's nickname, to his wife's chagrin, was "Dirty Belly".

We cherish his memory as a mild, kind man around Spearfish, who had his unique New York accent.  After retirement he enjoyed caring for his neighbors by delivering Meals on Wheels for many years. We will miss and remember his kindness and generosity, his New York Egg Cremes, and his hats with so many pins.  We will miss "Poppy"!

Don died on May 7, 2023, at the age of 88. Don was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy "Midge" Rehm; his parents Adam and Florence; and his four brothers, Eddie, Artie, Cliff, and Ben. He is survived by his sons: Richard (Penny) of Aliso Viejo, CA; and Russell Sr. (Linda) of Spearfish, SD; four grandchildren: Russell Jr. (Shelby) of Spearfish, SD, Nicole (Mike) Petronella of Little Elm, TX; Ryan (Kerri) of Sheridan, WY; and Cassandra (Joe) Lambert of Waikoloa, HI; and four great-grandchildren: Moira, Vinny, Nolan, and Eleanor.
