IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald "Don"
Dickey
November 20, 1931 – April 4, 2019
Donald Henry "Don" Dickey, 87, died Thursday, April 4, 2019 in Gillette.
Don was born in Deadwood, South Dakota to Samuel Curtis Dickey and Bertha Beatrice (Halvorsen) Dickey on Nov. 20, 1931. He was a lifelong resident of Gillette and was well-known and well-loved throughout the community.
The most important thing about Don was his relationship with Jesus Christ. He was baptized at the age of 13 and continued to walk with the Lord throughout his entire life. Don served his Savior faithfully in many ways, but one of the greatest impacts of his faith is the example he set for his family of a God-honoring life.
After graduating from Campbell County High School, Don served in the military with the Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He served at various bases throughout the United States and Japan. He was stationed at Osan Air Base in Korea during the Korean War.
On Sept. 18, 1955, Don married Louise Bundy of Gillette. Together they raised five children: Cynthia (Doug) Rigsby of Gillette, Marie (Mark) Ammann of Wall, South Dakota, Donna Dickey of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Robert (Tina) Dickey of Gillette, and Richard (Kris) Dickey of Gillette.
After his time in the Air Force, Don attended the University of Wyoming and Chadron State College.
As a young person, Don enjoyed spending time in the countryside, working for various local ranches. Don loved sports. He played basketball, football, and baseball, and he was recently inducted into the American Legion Hall of Fame for the Gillette chapter. An avid bowler, Don remained active in his bowling league until his death. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Masons, and Lion's Club for many years.
Don immensely enjoyed his daily morning visits to Perkins Restaurant. He worked various jobs throughout the community of Gillette, but he was best known for his work as a broadcaster/salesman with KIML Radio and as the owner of the Sears Catalog Store. Even more than his active community involvement, Don was known for his persistent kindness and generosity.
Don is survived by his five children and their spouses, seven grandchildren, ten greatgrandchildren (including two sets of triplets), and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, grandsons Timothy J. Rigsby and Jacob R. Dickey, brother Sam Dickey, and sisters Doris Weaver and Lois Hutt.
Services are planned for Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at New Life Wesleyan Church in Gillette, WY. Burial will follow at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery with a time of visitation following the interment. A memorial has been established to benefit Camp WYOBA on Casper Mountain.
One final comment from Don: Sandy, the race is over, I won.
