Obituary

Derald Dean Maddison, age 60 of Hulett, Wyoming, passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2025, surrounded by loving family, after a brief and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Derald was born February 19, 1965, in Spearfish, South Dakota to Evan and Diann (Oleson) Maddison. Derald was raised in Spearfish, often running around in the creek, stealing onions to snack on from the neighbor's garden, or causing trouble with his friends. You could usually find Derald and his sister Debbie tubing down Spearfish Creek or in the woods working with their dad. Derald was an avid sports lover, playing football and wrestling for the Spearfish Spartans.

Derald lived in Spearfish through his childhood until he joined the Army right out of high school. Derald served eight years alongside strangers who turned into brothers. Derald traveled to many places around the world, his favorite being Panama where he met the love of his life, Estela. Derald and Estela instantly knew they were meant for each other, only knowing one another for 3 months before getting married, his wife often saying, "when you know, you know." Derald and Estela recently celebrated their 35th anniversary, just as in love as the day they got married. After having their first child, a son, Jeremiah, Derald decided he wanted to leave the military so he could watch his children grow up. Derald and Estela moved to Beulah, Wyoming, where they had one more child, a daughter, Melissa. A year later they settled in Hulett, Wyoming where they would raise their two children.

Derald got a job at the local sawmill and worked his way up to head sawyer. He worked at the sawmill for 22 years before he retired following a car accident that left him with extensive injuries and a long road of recovery. Derald always put his family first, showing up to his kids' sports games after long days of work, or after the car accident, regardless of how much pain he was in. No matter what, Derald made it happen if it meant his family was happy. Over the years Derald and Estela opened up their home to family and friends who needed a safe and loving place to call home, whether it was just for the night or to stay.

Derald was a man of integrity, honesty, and kindness. He loved big and was loved by many. Derald was always joking, telling stories, and he could talk for hours.

Derald is survived by his wife of 35 years, Maritza Estela Maddison, His two children Jeremiah Maddison, and Melissa (Sawyer) Seville; his two adored grandchildren - Porter Maddison, and Naomi Seville; his sister Deb (Chad) Aspelin, three aunts, his dad's partner Marilyn, his mother-in-law, five sister-in-laws, one brother-in-law, and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Evan Maddison and Diann Dietzman, infant sister, father-in-law, his uncle, and his aunt.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Countryside Church in Spearfish, SD. A burial will follow the service at 1:30pm at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.

Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Isburg Crematory of Spearfish.
