Delores Maria Beckman, 83, Lead, SD died Sunday, March 9, 2014 after an extended period of health problems.
Delores was born on July 2, 1930 to Horace and Selma (Matti) Davey of Lead. She attended Lead High School and upon graduation went to college at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter and Nurses training at Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing in Minnesota. She returned to Lead, where she married Maurice Beckman in the Finnish Lutheran Church in Lead on April 4, 1953. The couple had two children Marcia Nelsen and John Beckman. She worked at Fort Meade VA for two years and a St. Joseph's Hospital in Deadwood. She also worked at Homestake Hospital in Lead for 29 years, where she was Director of Nursing and Black Hills Medical Clinic as clinical supervisor for 12 years, until her retirement.
She was an avid gardener and became a Master Gardener. She was also very involved in her church as church organist and accompanist, and met with her friends regularly for Bible study. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Lead until the church was moved and then participated in the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead. She loved doing crafts (tatting, crocheting, embroidery etc), did wood working and toll painting. She loved her pets and animals, an extension of her caring for people.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Horace and Selma Davey; her husband, Maurice and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her son, John Beckham, who was her primary care giver until her death, her daughter, Dr. Marcia (Jerry) Nelsen, Viborg, SD; sister, Doreen (Maurice) Plechot, Yorba Linda CA; cousin, Harold (Darlene) Matti, Minneapolis, MN; two nephews, Mike Plechot and Mark (Lori) Plechot, both of CA; three step-grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) Nelsen, Chad (Jamie) Nelsen, both of Viborg, SD and Karen (Matt) Bjordal, Centerville, SD and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at 10 A.M. Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel of Lead.
