Dean Hinmon, age 89, in recent years from Sturgis, South Dakota, died in the early morning hour of September 10, 2018. Dean, born October 30, 1928, and known as "Shorty" in his younger years was the son of George (also known as "Shorty") and Neva Hinmon. Dean passed away peacefully while under the loving care of the staff from the hospice unit of Fort Meade VA Black Hills with his daughter Susan at his side.
Dean spent much of the last half of his adult life living in New Mexico. He loved the Southwest for it's progressive thinking and climate, but especially the many dear friends he made there. Out of consideration for loved ones who wished to care for him however needed towards the end of his years, he moved to Wisconsin to be near them and then South Dakota when they relocated.
At age 17 Dean enlisted in the Navy then reentered at the start of the Korean War. After his military service he furthered his education at the University of Minnesota, eventually obtaining his PHD in Education/Counseling. He married Virginia Oates at age 20 and together they had four children; Michael, Jeffrey, Peter, and Susan. Dean progressed from teaching middle school after receiving his bachelor's degree, to secondary education, to college level professorship, to the position of Chairman of the Division of Education at University of Minnesota Morris.
Some of the many experiences Dean had in his life include: UNESCO expert teaching education in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, author of many books, short stories and essays, private pilot, computer software developer, sailing solo from Annapolis, MD to Key West, FL, High School counselor in the St Lawrence Islands of Alaska, yoga and weight control instructor, artist, property developer, guardianship of two Alaskan children, cartoon publisher, and member of the Church of Religious Science in Albuquerque, NM. , recruiting and mentoring members to provide revolving loans to assist individuals all over the world in developing self-sufficient businesses.
Dean will be dearly missed for his sincerity and kindness, the many laughs he invoked with his superb sense of humor, his creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm for life, and always a true love of learning. Dean's belief that the the deeper connection we all share far outweighs any personal differences has resulted in a life filled with abundant fulfilling friendships and close family bonds.
Dean is survived by his four children; Michael in Ft. Collins, CO, Jeffrey and wife Susan in Fairfax, VA, Peter in Albuquerque, NM, and Susie and husband Jack in Lead, SD, along with beloved grandchildren; Virginia Mollman and her fiancé Justin Sargent, Carl Wellford and his fiancé Rebecca Zaynor, great-grandchildren Noah, Bella, Brayden and Evelyn, his nieces and nephews and all his many dear friends too numerous to mention but each so very important to him.
