David L Bertch, 68, of Spearfish passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 7, 2017. Dave was born on June 22, 1948 in Selfridge, ND to Jacob and Katharina (Vetter) Bertch. At a young age his family moved to Belle Fourche, SD where he grew up and attended school. He was a member of the Class of 1966. After school, he enlisted in the South Dakota Army National Guard and served nearly 20 years in the 109th Engineer Group – 842nd Engineer Company – Detachment 1 – Belle Fourche.
As a young boy he delivered papers, worked at Eddies 5th Avenue Grocery Market, Belle Fourche Brick Factory and McLaughlin Sawmill in Spearfish. He met and married Alyce Revheim of Spearfish in 1969. He became a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and was involved with the Luther League for many years and was always seen cooking for the many various church events, his favorite being the Annual Thanksgiving Community dinner. He was active in the Youth Baseball program and the Spearfish American Legion where he served as Commander for many years. He loved bowling on the men's league and was always seen at every sporting event held. He loved driving charter bus taking all school teams to every event. His greatest joy and his reason to keep going strong was the love he had for his grandchildren, Landon and Nolan. This kind loving man with a heart of GOLD will be missed by all.
While living in Spearfish, he worked for Barber Transportation delivering freight; drove ambulance; worked for Fidler Funeral Home helping with funerals and digging graves. Later he worked for Pat's Moving and Storage, drove school bus and in 1986 returned to work at McLaughlin Sawmill which later became Hills Products as a forklift operator. He worked there until he had to take medical disability in 2010.
He is survived by his wife, Alyce; sons, Larry and Lance; grandsons, Landon and Nolan; all of Spearfish; sister, Agnes Bertch, Spearfish; brothers, Andrew (Paula) and Eugene (Pat) of Gillette, WY and sister, Alice Metzger, Aberdeen, SD; sister-in-laws, Gail (Revheim) Beck, Albuquerque, NM; Karen (Nick) Marchiando and Janice Rowett, all of Spearfish. He was preceeded in death by his parents; sisters, JoAnne and Betty and brother, James Bertch.
Visitation will be from 1:30-2:30 PM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 1020 State St, Spearfish SD on Thursday, February 9. Funeral service will follow at 2:30 PM at the church with the Rev Stephan Sandness officiating. Burial will take place at Rosehill Cemetery following the service.
