Obituary

Darrell Clayton Kerney, 64 of Spearfish, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014 at his home.

Darrell was born on July 12, 1949 in Hoven, SD to Clayton and Viola (Diegel) Kerney. He attended and graduated from Ft. Pierre High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the Army in 1969 and served in Vietnam being Honorable Discharged in 1971. He returned to Pierre and worked construction for the Corps of Engineers and Lyle Kenzy.

He married Kay Nickelson in Pierre in 1973. The couple moved to Spearfish in 1974 and he worked construction on the interstate. He attended and graduated from Black Hills State College in 1978. Following graduation he went to work for the Lawrence County Highway Department as a shop foreman and retired in 1999 due to his health. Darrell had a love for horses and cherished his pets. He trained horses riding in the hills and had a special love for team roping. He had a kind and loving heart for all.

He is survived by his wife, Kay, Spearfish, SD; mother, Viola Gabriel, Ft. Pierre, SD; brothers, Dennis (Bev) Kerney, Cavour, SD, Dwayne (Pam) Kerney, St. Onge, SD, Larry (Jennifer) Gabriel, Whitewood, SD and Leroy Gabriel, Sioux Falls, SD; sister: Linda (John) Sundahl, Pierre, SD; mother-in-law, Noreen Nickelson, Highmore, SD; brothers-in-laws, Neil (Alice) Nickelson, Mitchell, SD, Dennis Nickelson, Rapid City, SD, Larry (Bonnie) Nickelson, Highmore, SD and sister in-law, Brenda (Billy) Carrillo, Spearfish, SD, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton Kerney in 1971, step-father, Leo Gabriel in 2014, and father-in-law, Jr. Nickelson.

Visitation will be 4PM-6 PM, Wednesday, May 21 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 22 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spearfish. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to American Lung Association and Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
