Obituary

Cheryl Suzanne Runner Shuck, age 76, passed away peacefully at her home in Spearfish on February 15, 2022.

Cheryl Suzanne Runner Shuck (Cheri) was born on August 14, 1945, in Volga, South Dakota. At age 18 months, she was adopted by Richard and Redella Runner and brought to live in Martin, South Dakota. She was a happy child growing up. Her dad, Dick Runner, would arise early in the morning to get his work done at the shop so he could spend time with his family, taking them water skiing and spending time together as a family out at the reservoir. She also spent a lot of time with her cousin Danny on her uncle Harold's ranch where she enjoyed riding horses with her German Sheppard Shadow riding along with her on the back of her horse, Patsy. She was an avid piano player and was very talented, going on to teach piano lessons for over 50 years. Cheri graduated from Bennett County High School in 1963. She taught music in Martin, SD in 1968. She spent a summer working at Mount Rushmore and graduated from Black Hills State College in 1971. She met Lynn Shuck in June of 1969, was engaged in July of 1969 and was married on August 30, 1969. Two years later, on July 9, 1972, they were blessed with the first of their three children, Colby Richard Shuck. 22 months later, on May 7, 1974, Chad Lynn Shuck was born. Derek Lamont Shuck rounded out the family on July 13, 1980. The couple spent their time building their life in the cozy town of Spearfish, SD in the middle of the Black Hills.

Cheri was an active member of the Christian Woman's Club and the Young Mothers Club. Cheri was also an active member of the Butte and Lawrence counties 4-H program for over 30 years; and as a youth, she was awarded many purple ribbons for her work within 4-H. Cheri was also a devout member of the United Church of Christ and the New Covenant Christian Fellowship Church. She served as a deacon, organ/piano player, and accompanist for the United Church of Christ choir led by her son Colby. She also was an accompanist for the local area middle and high school students for band and chorus solo and group contest competitions. She opened a music store with her oldest son in 1995 where she taught piano lessons and offered the students of the Spearfish and surrounding area music lessons for all instruments.

Cheri was preceded in death by her father, Dick Runner; her mother, Redella Runner; her two aunts, Lenore Hurst and Leone Geersen, her uncle, Harold, and her cousin, Danny. She is survived by her husband, Lynn Shuck, her sons Colby (Teri) Shuck of Kadoka SD, Chad (Amber) Shuck of Upton, WY, and Derek (Matt) Shuck of Key West, FL; her grandchildren Racheal, Rebecca, Ryan, Gabriel (Harlie), Emily, Clayton, Katlyn, Alyson, and Sophie and one great-grandchild, Ivy.
