Charles M. Turbiville, 75, Deadwood, South Dakota passed away October 20, 2018 at his home.

Chuck was born July 13, 1943 in Buffalo, SD to Preston Turbiville and Wanda (Maliske) Turbiville. He graduated from Newell High School and attended USD and BHSU. In July of 1967, he enlisted in the army and was honorably discharged in July of 1969. As a 1st Lieutenant, he received a bronze star and two silver stars, which is the third highest decoration for valor in combat. One of the silver stars was for going up a hill under enemy fire to rescue a soldier under his command.

After his discharge from the military he worked for the Governor's Office of Economic Development in Pierre and served under a number of governors. His love for farming brought him back to his hometown of Newell where he took over his parents' farm. While in Newell he was president of the Newell School Board. He eventually returned to Pierre and state government and eventually to Deadwood, where in 1999 was the Economic Development Director. His love of politics grew while in Deadwood and he was State Representative of Lawrence County 2005‐2012 and 2017‐2018; Chair of the Legislative Council Executive Board 2011‐2012; Majority Whip 2007‐2008; LRC Executive Board member 2009‐2012, LRC Executive Board Chair 2011‐2012. He proudly held the position of Mayor since 2013.

Chuck also served on the South Dakota Lottery Commission from 2013 – 2016.

Chuck was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and the American Legion.

The most important thing in Chuck's life were his daughters and grandchildren. It was a common sight to see Papa Chuck at his grandchildren's sporting events. He was the happiest when surrounded by his family.

Happy to have shared his life are daughters, Krista (Jason) Young, Rapid City, SD; Jenni (Joel) Irwin, Murphy, NC; Becky (Jordon) Kitts, Pierre, SD; grandchildren, Mac (Heather) Young, Mitchell, SD; Natalie and John Young, Rapid City, SD; Caleb and Caitlynn Irwin, Murphy, NC; Abbi & Keegan Kitts, Pierre, SD and his first great-grandchild, Sawyer Lynn Young who is entering this world in November; sisters, Marjery McCracken, San Diego, California; Bev (Loren) Leichtnam, Sheridan, Wyoming and Kathy (Mark) Hammond, Pierre, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Waneta and Roy Keene and brother-in-law Michael McCracken.

Memorial visitation will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood on Sunday, October 28, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm to be followed by a Vigil. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 10:00 am at The Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Mayor's Fund, which was established by Chuck. He took the money received from performing weddings and helped fund youth programs for kids who otherwise would not be able to attend; i.e. camps, shoes, lunches and school supplies.
