Charles "Stanley" Somers, 86 of Spearfish, SD passed away April 25, 2014, at the VA Hospice Unit at Ft. Meade, SD.

Stan was born on January 9, 1928, to Hervey and Hazel (Carlstrom) Somers in Sturgis. Raised on their Whitewood Valley farm, Stan left South Dakota in 1945 to join the Navy, where he served as a machinist mate in the Pacific theater during WWII. His tour of duty included Guam, Hawaii, and Australia, and he was present at the first atomic bomb testing at the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

After an honorable discharge, Stan met and married Imogene Crane in Spearfish in 1948. They shared many good years owning various businesses and traveling from Alaska to Texas, and wherever they went Stan's carpentry tools were kept busy.

Stan was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life, and he especially enjoyed taking friends and family with him on his adventures. Stan and Jean returned to Spearfish in 1999. They always enjoyed the Black Hills, and it was good to be home.

Stan Somers is survived by his wife, Imogene of Spearfish; son, Jerry, also of Spearfish; daughter, Vickie (Robert) Fenimore of Camden, TN; three granddaughters, eight great-grandchildren; sister, Millie Kissack of Rozet, WY; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

The family would like to thank the ICU staff at Rapid City Regional Hospital and the Hospice Unit at Ft. Meade for their wonderful and compassionate care.

Visitation will be from 4-7pm, April 29, 2014 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral services will be 10am on April 30, 2014 at the funeral home in Spearfish. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors by the Spearfish Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to benefit the Spearfish Veterans Monument.
