Obituary

Dr. Charles Schad, 84 of Spearfish, passed away on January 8, 2016 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Monday, January 11, 2016 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at the United Church of Christ Church in Spearfish. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Spearfish Honor Guard and the US Army. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.

Charlie was born on August 23, 1931 in Lantry, SD to Gustave and Anna (Yusko) Schad. He graduated from Eagle Butte High School in 1949, Black Hills Teachers College in 1956 and received his Master's in Education in 1960. He went on to receive his Doctorate in Education from USD in 1967. His teaching career started in 1956 at Iron Lightning Day School on the Cheyenne Indian Reservation. From 1960-1965 he supervised student teachers at Black Hills Teachers College before taking a sabbatical to complete his Doctorate. From 1967-1987 he was the Director of External Affairs at Black Hills State University and from 1987-1996 a Professor for the College of Education at BHSU.

He married Nyla Wince on March 10, 1954. To this union five daughters and one son were born.

He is survived by his children, Terri (Dick) Dunwoody, Lynette (Teryl) Kelley, Nathel (James) Coca, Cami (Gary) Dohman, Michael (Jackie) Schad; 15 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nyla; daughter, Deanna Clarke.

Charles was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa and also a very proud US Army Veteran. He was also a true friend of the community of Spearfish, the face of BHSU and the voice of the Spearfish Spartans. He had a passion for gardening, pig roast, cream can dinners, telling amazing stories and a true sports enthusiast, being truly devoted to the Yankees, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Green Bay Packers and hometown favorites, the BHSU Yellow Jackets and the Spearfish Spartans.

Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
