Obituary

Charles C. McLain, 92 of Spearfish, passed away quietly June 3, 2017. But, he did not live quietly.

He was born June 18, 1924 in Hubbard, Ohio. He wrote his own obituary years ago, simply stating - I came, I lived, I left. Yes, he lived. He left high school to enter World War II, joining the Coast Guard. He served at sea, including two years in the South Pacific, until his honorable discharge. Leaving the service, he bought an Indian motor cycle. He left the West Coast and rode cross country to his bride to be, Marjorie Marsteller. They were married in Hubbard, Ohio on June 19, 1948. The couple moved 22 times to many states and worked in or owned many businesses, but always moving positively forward as a couple and a family. They retired to Spearfish and "Chike" (his own nickname) lived his retirement as he lived his life, full of energy and charging toward the future. He loved his family and the friendships he developed on the golf course and his many friends with whom he shared coffee. He loved to meet people and would visit with anybody. He simply loved life.

They were blessed with two children, Charles C. McLain IV (Vicki) and Debra D. Niesent (Ron); seven grandchildren, Ryan (Tara), Racheal (Ben), Robert, Adam (Kelly), Mike (Melissa), Katie and Kip and 12 great grandchildren, Rylee, Reagan, Ryder, Eden, Elijah, Emerie, Carerra, Izabella, Warren , Lexi, Carolyn and Otto.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at the Spearfish United Methodist Church. Inurnment will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to benefit Hospice of the Northern Hills and the United Methodist Church in Spearfish.
