Charles William Matson was born March 31, 1928 in Buffalo, S.D. to Sandy and Laura (Williams) Matson. He lived most of his life in Harding County. In 1944 he began his trucking career. In 1948 he married his longtime love, Jean Olson. They began ranching in 1961 and continued until 1968 when they bought and ran a leather store. In 1977 he was an Officer of the First State Bank in Buffalo, SD. He ran patrol for Harding County from 1980 to retirement in 1992. In 1997 Chuck and Jean moved to Spearfish to be closer to their great grandchildren.
His accomplishments were many, including Treasurer of the Lutheran Church, Director of State High School Rodeo, Past Master of Cedar Branch Masonic Lodge #179, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. One of his life joys was carpentry. He enjoyed creating projects for his grandchildren, great grandchildren and many others. His great grandchildren were the love of his life. He enjoyed and treasured all the time he got to spend with them. "Bops" will be greatly missed.
Chuck died at the age of 80 on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at home. He is survived by his wife, Jean, of 60 years; son, Terry (Terryl) of Spearfish, SD; daughter, Claudia, (Larry) Vroman of Buffalo, SD; son Sandy of Reva, SD; grandchildren, Terra (John) Shaffner of Castle Rock, CO; Terree (Alan) McCoy of Rapid City, SD; Taylor Vroman of Buffalo, SD; Ryan (Kelcee) Vroman of Meeker CO; great grandchildren; Kelyn, Karlee, Saidee, Sidnee, Silvee and Jace. He is also survived by one sister Mona (Elliott) Riggs of Farmington, NM.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, with Pastor Dar Berkenpas officiating.
Memorials will be divided between Hospice of the Northern Hills and the Buffalo Cemetery.
