Obituary

Carol Gloria Swanson Holso was born to Mathilda and Swan Swanson on Christmas Day in 1936. She peacefully joined her siblings and parents on November 15th, 2025.

Proudly, she has a pure 'Swede' heart, as her family descends from Lillhardal, Sweden. She grew up cherished as the baby of seven and resided in Lead, South Dakota the majority of her life. Carol attended primary and high school in Lead, Deadwood, South Dakota graduating in 1955. She eventually also graduated from the Black Hills Teachers' College. After a brief stint of teaching, she realized her calling was alongside her other family members working at Homestake Mine. As a secretary, she logged, sold, and distributed many bars of gold throughout the world. Later, she married David 'Skip' Holso and they later had their only child: Tracy. Carol was very proud of her daughter, and she continued to work and also care for her mother, Mathilda. Once diligently devoting over thirty years to the workforce, she retired. She spent a majority of her retirement caring for her only grandchild: Lauren. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Center with fundraisers and projects. Also, she spent time with her favorite activities including card club, slot machines, church services, and feeding the local animals. Her closest friends include her sister, Edith Mae and her long time pal, Kathryn Wermers. Carol could always be counted on to share a Diet Pepsi, a smoke, and some local free play at the casinos. In her final days, it is recognized that she truly enjoyed the care she had at Avantara North in Rapid City, South Dakota. Carol was recognized for being the Valentine's Queen and Elvis's girlfriend. She had many friends who enjoyed her daily company and teasing.

She is survived by her daughter, Tracy, granddaughter, Lauren, sister, Edith Cameron, and three great-grandchildren. She is also continually remembered by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place at 2:00 PM at the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead.  Burial will take place at 3:00 PM at Mountain Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Twin City Animal Shelter in Lead, South Dakota.
