Calvin L. Smith, 68, of Buffalo, SD, died Sunday, June 22, 2008 at his home near Buffalo.

Visitation will be from 2:00PM until 8:00PM on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, SD, with Prayer Services beginning at 8:00PM.

Funeral services will be at 2:00PM on Thursday, June 26, 2008 at the United Church of Christ-Congregational in Belle Fourche, SD, with Pastor Jean Helmer officiating, burial will follow at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Memorials will be used to benefit the Jones County and Harding County Fire Departments.

Calvin Lennis Smith was born June 4, 1940 at Spearfish, SD to Marion "Bunty" Malcolm and Lennis Smith of Belle Fourche. School began at Nisland, then Spearfish and he graduated from Newcastle High School. After two years of college, he started in the dirt business in the Wyoming oil fields.

In 1962 he and Dee Brost were united in marriage. In 1965 they moved to Jones County, SD to the Herman Brost ranch on the White River. After many years at Murdo, he decided to size down and purchased a ranch in Harding County.

Some of his favorites were his family, his grandchildren, and black Angus cattle. Cal's passions changed with the seasons, but always revolving around the ranch. From the start of the year with feeding cattle, on into calving, then it was branding time, haying season, fire season, the fall roundup and sale day--one was just as important as the next. He involved his family and friends at every opportunity, trying to have everyone share the ranch experience which he lived and enjoyed every day.

Calvin is survived by his wife Dee Smith, a daughter Julie (Travis) Hurst and grandchildren; Dalton, Sadee & Macy all of Buffalo, two sons, Lance (Brenda) Smith and grandchildren; Cheyenne, Morgan & Ashton of Marshall, MN, and Craig (Pam) Smith and grandchildren; Sawyer & Lydia of Storm Lake, IA. He is also survived by his mother Marion "Bunty" Olson of Santa Maria, CA, a brother Jim (Penny) Smith of Prescott, AZ, three sisters, Jeanne (Tom) Spawn of Casper, WY, Barb Olson (Robert) of Billings, MT, and Bonnie (Larry) Carney of Santa Maria, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lennis Smith and his step-father, Byron Olson.
