Buryl Eugene Walters was born to Harvey & Anna D. (Lien) Walters in Lyman County, July 29, 1923. The family farmed southeast of Presho SD. Buryl graduated from high school in Presho SD in 1942. Buryl married Dorothy 'Doe' Mae Venekamp in Presho on Nov 28, 1946. The couple farmed and ranched in the area until 1970. They had 3 children, Stephen Vance, Lesley Dawn and Wendee Anne. Buryl spent these years providing for his family materially and with his presence, always attending and supporting his children's activities and playing 'host' to Doe's hostess. The Walters home was always open to relatives and friends. Buryl was the Dad that hauled many a kid on hayrides, pep club rides and off to summer camp. He never missed a play, a concert or a living-room production. Buryl was funny, hard-working and hard-playing. He could dance, play cards and ice skate. He could tenderly nurture a new calf and then swear like a sailor. He was creative, frustrating and stubborn as a bull. Life was never dull to Buryl.
Buryl and Doe moved to Spearfish SD in 1970, where he worked at the Homestake Sawmill until retiring. He loved the Black Hills and had great times at 'the trailer at Sheridan Lake'. He went through heartbreak during these years, losing his son in 1976 and his wife in 1985. Buryl really came through during Doe's illness and was a devoted caretaker.
Buryl married Flora Miller from Spearfish in 1991. He was able to travel during this time and also volunteered a great deal. He was active in the Senior Citizen Center, Senior Olympics and enjoyed helping his neighbors, especially our dear late friend, Hazel Repass. Buryl was a member of the American Lutheran Church for most of his life.
Buryl and Flora's health declined the past few years and Flora passed away in Jan 2010. Buryl died peacefully at the Dorsett Home in the early morning hours of Tues, May 17, 2011.
