Billy Orrin Carmichael, a proud veteran of the Navy and Korean War passed away peacefully with his family at his side on December 14th, 2023.
The son of Norma and Orrin Carmichael, Billy grew up in Red Oak, Iowa. He was born on November 25th, 1936 and attended Red Oak, Iowa public schools and graduated in 1954. At age 19, Billy enlisted in the Navy. He valued this service highly and served from 1955 until 1958. Billy worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation as a Maintenance Engineer for 39 years.
Billy married the love of his life, Karen Carmichael (Pelzer) on February 22, 1959. He is survived by his wife, Karen, his two daughters, Holly Ann Hedge (Randy) and Polly Sue Rhode (Steven). He is also survived by six grandchildren - Stephanie Moore (Charlie), Carly Winterstein (Robert), Joshua Hedge (Alana), Jacob Holton, Cameron Rhode and Gavin Rhode (Shelby). Billy was blessed to have six living great-grandchildren, Lydia and Rudy Moore, Soren and Gwen Winterstein, and Chloe and Stella Rhode. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norma and Orrin Carmichael, his sister, Mary Breedlove (Charles) and great-granddaughter Ava Rhode.
Funeral services will be held at 3 PM on January 19th, 2024 at the Spearfish, South Dakota United Church of Christ at 920 N. Main St., Spearfish, SD 57783. Flowers and memorials can be sent to the church.
