Obituary

Beverly "Bev" R. Hink, 87, of Lead, died September 29, 2011, at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital in Deadwood, SD.

Bev was the fifth of seven children born on August 19, 1924 in Raymond, SD, to Walter and Rose Marie (Stader) Hink. He attended country school and married Laura Wahl May 28, 1945, in Bristol, SD. To this union, three children were born: Colleen Schuett, Marie Patterson and Donna Hink. In 1945, he entered and served in the US Army, before returning to the farm. In 1953, the family moved to Lead, where he worked for Homestake Mining Company for over 32 years, retiring in 1985. Laura died in 1980. In 1982, he married Judy (Bertolotto) Johnson, whose children are Marcia Davis, Jolene Geer and Ross Johnson.

Bev is a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and served on its Board of Trustees. In 1986 he was elected to the Lead City Commission, serving 10 years, and then was elected to a three-year term as Mayor of Lead. Other affiliations and offices include: President, Twin City Development Corp.; President, Northern Hills Development Corp.; Lead/Deadwood Hospital; Housing and Transportation Advisory Board; South Dakota Municipal League Board of Directors; Dorsett Home Advisory Board; Member, Northern Hills Hospital Pioneer Club; President, District 10 Municipal League; President, Northern Hills Solid Waste District; Member, Neighborhood Housing; Member, Homestake Post 31 American Legion, Commander for 12 years; President, Northern Hills Mayors' Association; State President, CanAm Highway, International Vice President; American Cancer Society, State and Lawrence County Boards; Heartland Expressway task force member; Chairman, Lead 4th of July Committee; SD State Centennial Board; Northern Hills Railroad Authority.

In "retirement" he drove shuttle for the Golden Hills Resort and Mineral Palace. His Kiwanis membership began on April 15, 1987 and has included twenty-one years of perfect attendance. He has served almost continuously as a Board of Directors Member and completed a term as President, shortly thereafter receiving the prestigious George F. Hixson Award. He has served on the Nominating Committee, the Prospector Bowl Committee and the IDD (Iodine Deficiency Disorders) Committee. However, perhaps his most exemplary participation takes place in the Kiwanis Calendar project where he sells a large number of calendars to individuals and almost single-handedly sells all of the advertising. In this role, he generated over half of the profits from the entire project.

Bev is survived by his wife, Judith, Lead; his daughters, Colleen (Dale) Schuett, Onida, SD; Marie Patterson, Wichita, KS; Donna Hink, Lincoln, NE; Marcia (John) Davis, Centerville, IA; Jolene Geer, Sedalia, MO; son, Ross Johnson, Spearfish; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters and special family friend Diane Obrist, Lincoln, NE.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Laura, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and grandson, Clinton Nelson-Johnson.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M., Sunday, October 2, 2011, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will follow at Mt. Lawn Cemetery in Lead.
