IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty Jo
Roberts
November 4, 1933 – March 3, 2020
Betty Jo Roberts, 86 of Spearfish, South Dakota, passed away on March 3, 2020, at Monument Health, Rapid City.
Betty Jo Roberts was born on November 4, 1933, to Alma (Barber) Majors and Wilson Majors, in Hill City, SD, joining a family with an older sister, Joyce. The family moved to California in 1936. From 1941 to 1945, with the threat of World War II, the sisters moved from the west coast to live with grandparents on the Barber Homestead near Rapid City, S.D. Attending a one-room schoolhouse, helping with chores on the farm, and spending time with cousins in the Black Hills, the girls returned to their home in northern California. Always wanting to be a nurse, upon high school graduation, Betty Jo enrolled in Hollywood Presbyterian School of Nursing.
In 1955, Betty Jo married Bob Long, a union to which two sons, Steven and Matt, were born. Bob and Betty Jo were divorced in 1976. In 1980, Betty Jo married Dr. Bob Roberts, and after two years in California, moved to Spearfish to establish a practice in internal medicine. Shortly thereafter, both sons & families also moved to Spearfish, truly a joy for Bob and Betty Jo. In 2000, Betty Jo was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. After extensive surgery in Sioux Falls, she was given 6 months to live. With multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, she was declared fully recovered, and ready to pursue her previous activities.
"Life in Spearfish has been very good to us. Our faithful church family and our Spearfish friends have blessed our lives in so many ways."
Betty Jo is survived by her devoted husband and best friend, Dr. Bob Roberts; sons, Steven (Barbara) Long, Matt (Barbie) Long; grandchildren, Ali (Matt) Morog, Wilson Long & Maren Long; great-grandchildren, Leo and Maisie Morog; sister, Joyce Wilson; beloved nieces, nephew, cousins and spouses; stepchildren, Kimi (Martin) Pedley, Kari Meyer, Jami (Jim) Hopper, Angela (Tim) Abbey, Mike (Shelley) Roberts; nine step-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.
