Betty Abel, 94 of Spearfish, passed away on July 15, 2017 at the Belle Fourche Healthcare Center.
Betty was born on July 19, 1922 in Huron, SD to Will and Mabel (Allen) Meisenhelder. She grew up on their farm and attended a country school, graduating from Alpena High School in 1941.
She married Harold Hofer in 1941 and they lived in Huron where she worked at National Bank of SD. They had two children. After their divorce, she worked at Farmers and Merchants Bank. In 1951, she married Francis "Chip" Chipman and they moved to Southern California. They had one child. After they moved back to Spearfish she worked at the David M. Dorsett Home. Later they moved to Minneapolis where they both worked at Fort Snelling VA Hospital. Due to her husband's health they moved back to Whitewood and worked at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.
After her husband died she met and married O.G. "Pete" Abel and they lived on a small acreage in Belle Fourche, SD. After his death in 2004 she moved back to Spearfish.
She is survived by her daughter, Roxey (David) Whitted; her son, Bill (Sharon) Chipman; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four nieces and a brother-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband's; parents; son, Ronald Hofer and three sisters.
