Obituary

Beryl Johnson, 84 of Cheyenne, WY and formerly of Spearfish, SD, passed away on December 6, 2017 at his home in Cheyenne.

Beryl Edward Johnson, son of Emil and Nina Johnson, was born April 27, 1933 at his parent's farm near Ethan, South Dakota. He grew up and attended school there. Beryl served two years in the US Army during the Korean War.

After his service to the country he received his B.S. Degree from Southern State Teachers College at Springfield, SD in 1957. Upon graduating college, Beryl went to work for the South Dakota Department of Highways.

On September 7, 1958 he married Marlene Weber in Pierre, SD. In 1961 they moved to Cheyenne, where Beryl was employed by the Wyoming Highway Department for 27 years, retiring in 1988. In 2002, they moved to Spearfish, SD. Beryl was a member of the United Methodist Church in Spearfish.

During Beryl's earlier year he enjoyed woodworking and doing small remodeling jobs. He worked part time finishing basements, shingling houses and office remodeling. Many small woodworking projects were also completed in his basement workshop.

Beryl also enjoyed trading cars. He prided himself in knowing more about the car he was trying to purchase than the car salesperson. He purchased approximately 30 new cars and trucks during his lifetime.
After moving to Spearfish, he enjoyed helping at the Senior Center and spent many afternoons playing "500" and pinochle with his friends. Beryl also enjoyed traveling. He visited every state in the continental U.S. and made many trips to Branson to enjoy the entertainment.

His life was shared by his wife, Marlene; two sons, Alan (Gwen) of Wilsonville, OR, and David (Linda) of Cheyenne, WY; a sister, Mrs. Norma Koster of Bloomington, MN; and two grandchildren, Cameron and Jeana. Beryl was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 15, 2017 at United Methodist Church in Spearfish. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
