Berthana Main, 94, of Spearfish, SD, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be from 2:00 until 6:00p.m. with family present from 4:00 until 6:00p.m. on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.
Funeral services will be at 11:00a.m. on Monday, April 6, 2009 at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Spearfish, with Pastor Gene Bauman officiating.
Memorials will be given to Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Spearfish.
Berthana was born June 6, 1914 to Joseph & Olive (Olson) Varland. She grew up in the Watauga area and was married to Earl Main on March 31, 1940. The couple farmed and ranched near Watauga until 1957 when they moved to Spearfish. Earl worked at the Skelly Service Station and Berthana had a daycare in their home. Then they farmed and ranched north of Spearfish on the Howard Perkins Ranch, the Spearfish Valley Ranch, and the Oliver Swanson Ranch until their retirement.
Berthana was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Spearfish. She greatly enjoyed all of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and the children that she cared for. She enjoyed visiting with friends, gardening and watching Lawrence Welk. She loved to dance and listen to music.
Berthana is survived by her daughter, Diane (Don) Sparling of Spearfish, 5 granddaughters: Sheri (Kevin) Faust of Omaha, NE, Kathy (Russ) Jones of Columbia, MO, Lori (Doug) Naufel of Broken Arrow, OK, Brenda (Mike) Dingwell of Attica, MI, and Sandy (Earl) Hornbeck of Lapeer, MI, 11 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Berthana was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl of 62 years, and two brothers Vearl and Percy Varland.
