Obituary

Bert Messmer, 82 of Deadwood passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Funeral Services for Bert, will be at 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Bert was born February 2, 1932 in Hirschville, North Dakota to George and Rosalia (Keller) Messmer. He was raised on the family farm and attended high school at Assumption Abby in Richardton, ND. Bert served in the US Army from 1953-1955, primarily in Greenland.
Bert married Susan Ott of Belfield, ND on June 18, 1957, six children were born to this union. Bert and Susan raised their family in Deadwood, where he resided for the majority of his life. Bert worked for Homestake Mining Company from in Lead from 1961 to 1992.

He is survived by his children, JoAnn (Floyd) Park of Rapid City, SD, Perry (Ma'bel) Messmer of Whitewood, SD, Donna VandenHoek Wiles (David)of Spearfish, Francis Messmer of Phoenix, AZ, Sheila Messmer of Phoenix, AZ and Scott (Elizabeth) Messmer of Manassas, VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Debbie Messmer of Sturgis, SD, Christopher VandenHoek of Sioux Falls, SD, Jennifer VandenHoek Skelton (Austin) of Charleston, SC, Kimberly and Ashley Messmer of Whitewood, SD and Joshua, Jonathan, Gabrielle, Abigail, Jessica and Isaiah Messmer of Manassas, VA, brother, George Messmer of Deadwood, step-sisters; Elsie Tormaschy of Dickinson, ND, Jane Reith of Fargo, ND, Shirley Semerad of Palm Desert, CA and step-brothers; Harold of Lemmon, SD, Lee of Rapid City, SD and Gerald of Denver, CO
Bert was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Barbara, brothers; Jerry, Leo, Joe and Jack, sisters; Louise and Rosie, step-brothers, Richard and Frank and step-sister, Mary. Also preceding him in death were two infant grandchildren, George Timothy Messmer and Helen Marie Messmer.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the medical staff at Ft. Meade VA for the wonderful care you provided our Dad the past 14 years. A special thank you to Dr. Efrem Vargas.
