Obituary

Beatrice Ann Sigman age 87 of Spearfish SD passed away early morning October 14, 2024, at Spearfish Canyon Healthcare.

Bea was born in Sioux Falls SD on September 1, 1937, to Harold and Fern Reed. She and her sister Judy grew up in Sioux Falls, Chicago, San Diego and then Belle Fourche where she graduated high school. Because Bea skipped two years of elementary school, she was well known for her almost illegible self-taught handwriting. Bea attended Augustana College at age 16 for Medical Technology and then returned to Belle Fourche SD. Bea was a pretty woman and was first runner-up to Miss Belle Fourche at age 18.

Around 1955 Bea met Jack Sigman who asked her to marry him the first time at age 19. They married in 1959 after Jack returned from the Korean War and were married for 61 years before his passing in 2020.

Bea and Jack moved to California after getting married and welcomed their two children Steven and Dianna 10 months apart.  Bea was raised in a harsh household, and she would easily admit that being a mother did not come easily to her.  She loved her children and did her best with the tools she had. She was a better grandmother and even better great-grandmother.

Bea graduated from the Ventura College nursing program and worked as an RN at Northridge Hospital in Southern California before she and Jack retired to their dream log home in the Black Hills Forest of Spearfish South Dakota. While living in California she and Jack enjoyed archery, golfing, learning to play the guitar, and camping and fishing. They had many neighborhood and work friends.

Bea was a gifted quilter and made many beautiful quilts for her home and family. She created beautiful cross-stitch projects. She loved her house plants and raised orchids at one time. She was an artist. She did not like to cook ' because it was too much like chemistry", but she made a mean pineapple casserole every holiday. Later in life, she was an expert Lean Cuisine microwave chef. Bea loved movies and television. She knew everything about many celebrities.

Bea was a stubborn woman; she said what she was thinking even if you didn't want to know.  She liked being catered to. She was also generous. She contributed to many charities but didn't tell anyone. She helped her family when they needed it. She had her own religious, spiritual and political beliefs which were none of your business.  She was a huge part of our lives and will be missed. She was loved by her children, their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Bea is survived by her children Steven Sigman and Dianna (Michael) Monahan, five grandchildren, Daniel Burg and his partner Amanda, Kyle Burg and his wife Alicia, Joy Norlin and her husband Benjamin, Jack Sigman, Caitlin Monahan and eight great-grandchildren, Isabella and Brenna burg, Ayvree and Lyla Burg,  Alex, Ashtyn, Alayna and Arlo Norlin.  Nieces and nephews Camille, Nicole, Sheldon and Jeff.

Waiting to greet her were her husband Jack, sister Judy Knocke and brother-in-law Ed, sister-in-law Marylou Elliott and brother-in-law Don, her parents, parents-in-law John and Tillie Sigman, several friends and extended family members.

The family would like to thank her caregivers from Home Instead, Monument Health and Spearfish Canyon Health Care who enjoyed her spicy personality.

A graveside committal service will be held at 11:30am on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.  Family and friends will gather at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Home in Spearfish at 10:30am, on Tuesday to travel in procession to the cemetery.
