Barney Swartz 81, of Spearfish, passed away on September 28, 2011, at Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Memorial Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, October 3, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery. Memorials has been established to benefit the Hospice Unit or the Chemo Clinic at Ft. Meade VA Medical Center.

Barney was born on June 17, 1930 to Walter and Anna (Wiitola) Swartz of Gackle, ND. Barney was raised and educated in the Gackle area. In 1950 he joined the Navy, serving four years during the Korean War on two different ships before being honorable discharged in 1954. He graduated from Barber College in 1955, working in Rapid City for two years before moving to Spearfish. He bought a barber shop in 1958 and retired in June of 2000.

Barney was very active in civic affairs. He was a charter member of the Spearfish Rifle Club, the Spearfish Ambulance Service, the Police Reserve, Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department and a Safety Fire Arms Instructor for the Hunter Safety Course from 1958 to 1998, having helped over 2000 boys and girls complete the course.

Those sharing his life were his wife of 49 years, Pearl of Spearfish; daughter Wendy (Roy) Miller of Torrington, WY and their children Paula, Ashley and Kody; sons Guy of Alliance, NE, his daughter Lindsay and Jerry (Gina) of Buffalo, SD and their children Lacy, Cody and Billie; brother Bert of Custer and Wally of Spearfish and sister Violet George of Emporia, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Irvin, Merle, Marlin, Alvin, Vernon and Gene and sisters Mary Bly, Mildred Swartz and Helen Leonard.
