Barbara Ann Furnish, 88, of Spearfish, SD, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2013 at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center in Spearfish.
Barbara "Bobbe" was born on February 27, 1925 in Ranchester, Wyoming to Vint and Esther Johnston. She grew up in Ranchester with her siblings; Charlotte, Helen Ruth, and Ray. Bobbe graduated from Ranchester High School in 1943. She then attended the University of Wyoming where she studied education. Following her time at the University of Wyoming Bobbe worked as an airline stewardess for Western Airlines. During World War II she moved to Long Beach, California, where she worked at a Naval Shipyard. She then returned to Ranchester and worked in the family business, V.C. Johnston Lumber Co.
Bobbe was married to Richard Furnish on August 17, 1956 in Ft. Collins, Colorado. They made their home in Cheyenne, Wyoming and lived there for over 40 years. Together Bobbe and Dick raised two sons, Cal and Rick. Bobbe was a Medical Transcriptionist for many years for the Internal Medicine Group of Cheyenne. In 1998 Dick and Bobbe moved to Spearfish, SD to be closer to family, and have been residents there since that time.
Bobbe was known for her kind heart and gentle spirit. Being with family and friends has always been her favorite source of joy. She had the gift of encouragement and even in her last days was encouraging everyone around her. She is leaving a lasting legacy of love, strength and commitment to family for the generations to follow.
Survivors include her husband, Richard "Dick" Furnish; sons, Cal (Nancie) and Rick (Vicki) Furnish; a sister, Helen Ruth Popp; seven grandchildren, Shawn, Kelly, Daniel, Megan, Ericka, Vint and Alyssa; five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at Countryside Church in Spearfish at 11:00 on Friday, November 22, 2013, followed by a luncheon at the church. Inurnment will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Bobbe at Pioneer Bank and Trust of Spearfish for the benefit of the American Foundation for the Blind and for Countryside Church of Spearfish.
