IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur
Hartwell
December 2, 1938 – June 10, 2024
Arthur Roy Hartwell, 85, of Spearfish, SD passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024, at Spearfish Canyon Healthcare in Spearfish, SD.
Arthur was born on December 2, 1938, in Mobridge, SD, a son of James and Cleta (Perkins) Hartwell. He grew up on the family farm south of Morristown, SD where he attended country schools near Morristown. Following school Art worked as a hired hand for many of the local farmers and ranchers. He had an interest in mechanics and welding and was able to become a self-taught mechanic and welder.
At the encouragement of a friend, Art went on a blind date with Betty Harwood which started a courtship between the two. Eventually Art took a trip to Dodge Center, MN in March of 1960. Art and Betty were married on May 13, 1960, in Kasson, MN. To this union six children were born: Janell, Brenda, Jim, Arthur, Roy, Alberta and Dick. They lived in Dodge Center, MN, Morristown, SD, Hebron, ND and Breckenridge, MN.
In the early 1980's, Art, with the help of his family started a very successful on the farm mechanic and welding business. He answered calls for his services in a 100-mile radius of Morristown. Art would later relocate his business to Hebron, ND.
While in Morristown, Art became one of Jehovah's' Witnesses on May 5, 1995. In his ministry he loved to share the scripture of 2 Timothy 3:1-5, because he wanted others to understand why he could see such problems in the world today and direct them to the hopeful future that the Bible promises in Revelations 21:3-5. Eventually Art and Betty moved to Breckenridge, MN where they made their home until Betty's passing. Art would eventually move to Spearfish, SD in 2023, where he lived until his passing.
Those left to mourn his passing are his children, Janell and Brenda of Spearfish, SD and Jim (Martina) of Belle Fourche, SD; Four grandchildren, Tyson Hartwell, AJ (Kayla) Hartwell, Shantel Hartwell and Nicholas Hartwell; and three great-granddaughters. Art was preceded in death by his parents, James and Cleta, his wife, Betty, his children, Alberta, Arthur Jr. and Dick.
