Arline Marie McLearie, 91, passed away on September 26, 2013, at home in Glendora, CA
Arline was born on February, 20, 1922, in Wetonka, SD, Arline was one of seven children born to Hamlet and Inez Ellington of SD. She grew up in Spearfish, and attended nursing school in Deadwood, at St. Joseph's Hospital, where she was awarded an R.N. degree. Arline is survived by five children, Sylvia, (son-law Alan Newman), Lorna, Margaret, John and Dan, and her brothers, Edward and Darwin Ellington, sisters Heidi Brooks and Eloise Harback. She was predeceased by her brother, John Ellington, and her sister, Celia Bowen. Arline is also survived by four grandchildren; Heather, Amanda, Danielle, and Cameron, and three great-grandchildren Oliver, Emese, and Lily.
While a young nurse in Deadwood during World War II, Arline met her first husband, Lt. Howard F. Kohl, while he was in officer's training at Fort Meade. They were married in November of 1943, in Deadwood, six months later Lt. Kohl left for active duty in England. He was killed in action in Holland, in October of 1944, 2 months after the birth of their daughter, Sylvia. In 1948 Arline moved with her daughter to California, where she married John R. McLearie of Rapid City, SD. Arline and John, a graduate of USC and WWII Navy veteran, had four children; Lorna, Margaret, John, and Dan McLearie. The family lived in Arcadia before moving to Sacramento in 1953, where John (known also as Bob or Mick) worked for Aerojet General. In 1970, Arline returned to her nursing career and worked at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento. The family moved to Glendora, California, in 1975, where John was employed at Northrop Grumman and Arline was a nurse at Santa Teresita until she retired in 1982. John died in 2008, and Arline remained in her home in Glendora. She was an active member of St. Dorothy's Catholic Church. She was known to all for her grace, spirituality, and empathy for people.
Her family will gather in Spearfish, South Dakota on Saturday, October 12th, 2013, to celebrate her life. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9am, Saturday, October 12, 2013 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish, and she will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
