Obituary

Andrew Richard "Rick" McDevitt III, died June 5 at the age of 61 in Spearfish, South Dakota after a long illness. Rick survived polio at the age of 7 and suffered for many years from post-polio syndrome.

Rick was known in San Antonio and South Texas as a popular radio disc jockey in the 1970s and 1980s, in particular at KKYX, where he worked for many years as both a "jockey" and as a production engineer. "I can remember going to visit him in the booth while he was working the late night shift at KKYX out on Bandera Road," said his sister, Therese McDevitt. "It was so much fun listening to him on the radio, and to hear him interact with all the callers. He loved listening to people and would spend extra time with the ones he called 'the lonelies' – the ones who were calling him because they didn't have anyone else to talk to. He always let them know that there was someone out there who cared about what they wanted to say."

He was also a talented photographer and silversmith, and had a great appreciation for art and music of all kinds; he was also an avid reader and loved to discuss books and movies. He was a familiar fixture on the sidelines of the Spurs games in the mid-70s as a freelance photographer and was always thrilled when he got a good shot of one of his favorite players.

In recent years he made his home in South Dakota, which he loved. Rick made many lasting friendships in Lead and Spearfish during his years in the Black Hills and spoke lovingly of the people and the landscape there.

He is survived by his sisters and their families: Peggy and Tom Beck; Kathy McDevitt Garza; Therese McDevitt, all of San Antonio, and Martha and David Heckerman of Midway, Kentucky; his daughter, Amy McDevitt and her fiancé, Lionel Perez, of Austin; nieces Julie Beck and her fiancé, John Rogers; Mimi Beck, Margie Beck Doran and her husband Edward Doran; great-nephew Ian Doran and great-niece Audrey Doran; nephew Gabriel Garza; an aunt, Teresa Goodrich Perovich of San Antonio; his uncle David Goodrich and aunt Mary Goodrich of San Antonio; numerous cousins and many friends in San Antonio and East Texas. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Andrew R. McDevitt II and Martha Etty Goodrich McDevitt of San Antonio, and by his beloved wife, Susan Mattox McDevitt of San Antonio.

Rick's family wishes to extend special thanks to his loving friends in South Dakota: Connie and Jerry Blair; Terry Trucano; his physician, Dr. Deborah Kullerd and the wonderful and caring staffs at the David M. Dorsett Home and Hospice of the Northern Hills. Thanks also to the caring staff at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Home in Spearfish.

Memorial services will be held in Spearfish, SD on and in San Antonio later this summer.
