Amie DeEtte (Rice) Cundy, 102 of Newcastle, WY died Monday, January 5, 2009 at Weston County Health Services.
She was born October 1, 1906 in Spearfish, SD to Samuel and Laura Rice. Her childhood home in Spearfish is still occupied and is called the Artemis House. Amie graduated from the Spearfish Normal which later became Black Hills State University. On December 24, 1925 she married Henry Cundy of Spearfish and to this union 13 children were born. The couple was purchasing the original Rice homestead in the Crow Peak area, but then The Great Depression of the 1930's hit, like many others, they lost their land. They then resided on other farm properties in the Spearfish and Vale area. In the summer of 1949 they moved with their 12 children to Sundance, WY. In the mid 1950's Amie began teaching at rural Crook County Schools, including the Kickbush School, Chatfield School, Petersen School and Upton, WY Elementary. She attended summer school classes at Black Hills State College for several years and proudly graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education at the age of 56. That same month, the family with just 3 children left at home, moved to Casper, WY where Amie became a 1st grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School and then at Park Elementary. She retired from full-time teaching in 1973, but continued as a substitute teacher until her mid 70's. She and Henry traveled until his death in October 1974. She then traveled with her son, Henry, including a trip to England, Switzerland, Alaska and various other US destinations, but the Black Hills was always her favorite spot. Amie lived in her Casper home with her son, Henry, until age 97 when due to health issues she was transferred to the Weston County Nursing Home.
She is survived by six sons; Walter (Betty), Mesa, AZ, Robert (Verna), Casper, WY, Leslie (Donna), Gillette, WY, Art (Alice), Rozet, WY, Henry, Casper, WY, Cecil (Becky), Sundance, WY and two daughters: Katie (Phillip) Kudlock, Newcastle, WY and Marilyn (Ron) Hess, Homer, AK. Other survivors include 32 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her three eldest children and their spouses; Harold (Margie), Ellen (Irwin) Roadifer, and Patricia Hill. A son Warren died in infancy. She was also preceded in death by seven siblings including one sister who also lived to 102 years of age.
Funeral services will be held at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, on Friday, Jan 9, 2009 at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Peg Grzelkowski officiating and burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 7:00-8:00 PM at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.
