Obituary

Alvin L. Hall, 77 of Spearfish and formerly of Vivian, SD died on April 8, 2014 at his home.


Al was born on May 11, 1936 to Sam and Signe (Sletto) Hall in Vivian and grew up in that area. He graduated from Vivian High School in 1954 where he was a member of the State "B" Championship Debate Team. Al graduated from Black Hills State College with degrees in Journalism and History. As a senior he edited the National Award winning college newspaper.


In 1964, he married Helen Cox of Presho at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho. As an active Catholic, he taught high school catechism classes in Pierre, Spearfish, Fort Pierre, Onida and Presho.


He did basic and advanced training in the US Marine Corps followed by five and a half years in the SD National Guard. During his career, he worked in Washington, DC for Representative E.Y. Berry, was info and sports information director at BHSU and also worked in state government in Pierre.


Al retired in 1994 and moved back to Vivian and worked several summer at the State Information Center on I-90 and spent several winters in Arizona. He moved to Spearfish in 2012 to be near his nephew Kurt Hall and his wife Joyce and other relatives and to be near medical facilities.


Alvin is survived by his brothers, Wayne of Las Vegas, NV, Orville and his wife Nila of Vivian; brother-in-law Duane Cox and his wife Karyn of Sioux Falls; sister-in-law, Bev Cleveland of Presho; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; baby daughter, Kendra; his parents; two brothers; four sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law.


Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 A.M. (CST) on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho with Father Gary Oreshoski officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Angel Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Christ the King Maintenance Fund, Hospice of the Northern Hills or a charity of one's choosing.
