Philip Alvin Dyer, 86, Spearfish, SD died Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center, surrounded by his family.
Alvin was born October 31, 1927 to Philip and Hattie May (Budnick) Dyer and at their home in Lead. He graduated from Lead High School in 1945. Alvin joined the US Navy in December 1945 and served aboard the USS Bexar. He left the service as an atomic veteran in 1947. He then attended Black Hills State College, South Dakota State University and the School of Mines. He married Jean Lee on February 25, 1951 at the Lead United Methodist Church.
He was employed by the Homestake Mining Company from the age of 16, and retired in 1985. During that time he apprenticed in the machine shop, made hand grenades during World War II and eventually became the foreman of the maintenance shop crew. He served as the President of the Homestake Veterans Association for many years.
Alvin was raised as a Master Mason in Lead Golden Star Masonic Lodge #9 on June 4, 1949. He was also a member of the Lead Chapter 18 Eastern Star, Black Hills Consistory, Red Cross of Constantine, Commandery, Royal Arch Masons, Scottish Rite, Night Templers, York Rite, the Shriners and Job's Daughters Bethel #11 of Lead. He donated many hours to the Shrine Circus, as well as transporting local families to and from the Shriners Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, also a Charter Member of the Flying Aces and flew the Red Baron in many local parades. He was caretaker of the Masonic Cemetery in Lead for many years. He was also a Meals on Wheels driver for many years in Spearfish, after Alvin and Jean moved there in 1986 to the home that he built. He touched many lives in the community and he valued each of those relationships.
He is survived by Jean, his wife of 63 years; his daughters, Trudy (Dan) Regan, Lead, Deb (Arni) Olson, Deadwood; son, David, Whitewood; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Marge Bjorlo, Fort Collins, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Preston, in infancy.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, April 14 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead. Inurnment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
