Obituary

Allan Curtis Arends, age 74, of Lead SD (formerly of Lake Poinsett SD) passed away on Thursday, June 8th, 2023, at his home in the Black Hills.

Allan was born to Arnold and Ruth Arends on March 25th, 1949, in LaJolla, CA. He grew up on the family farm in rural Hartford. Allan attended school at Parker and West Central. He served in the US Army from 1969-1971.  He married the love of his life Janet Schievelbein on May 12th, 1973, and they welcomed two children, Nicole and Casey.  Al worked many years at Dacotah Cement as a terminal manager until his retirement.

Allan was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working outside at his home near Lead, SD.  Al could be found around the poker table playing Texas Hold 'Em, exploring gun shows to add to his collection or trail riding in the Black Hills with friends and family. Al was a skilled metal fabricator and was always looking for a little project he could work on. Allan and Jan enjoyed many travel adventures together, making friends everywhere they went, before settling in Florida during the winters. Allan recently completed building their dream home in the Black Hills. Al and Jan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 12th, 2023.

Allan is survived by his wife Janet (Schievelbein) Arends, his children Nicole Kranz, Casey (Angela) Arends of Watertown, SD; his beloved dog Meadow; his sisters Lorrie (Doug) Bacon, Sherrie (Ray) Tracy; sister and brother-in-law Steve (Karen) Schievelbein; six grandchildren McKenzie (Brandon) Fisher, Kendra Kranz (Alex), Jayda Kranz (Joseph) Destiny (Tanner) Redlin, Logan (Tiffany) Arends, Kennedi Arends (Sage); one great-grandchild Annie Jo Arends.

Allan is proceeded in death by his parents Arnold and Ruth Arends, his father and mother-in-law SC (Bus) and Dorothy Schievelbein.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead, SD.  Interment with military honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Arrangements are under the care of Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead.
