Alice Irene Varland, 91 of Lead, SD died peacefully on April 14, 2023, at the Rolling Hills Healthcare facility in Belle Fourche, SD after several months of declining health.

Alice was born in Trail City, SD on October 2, 1931, to Fred and Emma Bieber. She later moved to Macintosh, SD and was raised with two brothers Werner and Gerhard and three sisters, Edna, Joy and Karol. She met Monte Varland of Morristown, South Dakota in the late 1940s and they were married as youngsters on August 6, 1949. Alice and Monte lived, laughed and loved together as dedicated soulmates for over 70 years.

Alice came to Lead in the late 1940s and began raising a family of five kids and eventually began work as a secretary for the Lead school system at the Central Building in the early 1960s. Alice retired in the late 1980s after decades of dedicated service in the Lead school system. She positively impacted countless kids and teachers as a compassionate, caring worker and friend.

She poured out her life for her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was known as a loyal friend to countless people throughout the community. She loved being with people and was simply known and dearly loved by a large family as "Gran" and was always there to provide unending love, support and a helping hand to all.

Alice is survived by children Alan (Bonnie), Rick (Robyn), Jody (Jack), Guy (Rhonda), and Tracy (Bruce); beloved grandchildren Kal (Angi), Amy, Chad (Tonya), Christy, Tyler, Brandon; great-grandchildren Kayden, Alice, Brooklyn, Hudson, Grace, and great-great-grandchild Estes May Varland.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead.  Inurnment will follow in Mountain Lawn Cemetery at Lead.  A celebration of life and service for Alice will be held on July 8, 2023, from 3-5 pm at the Lead Country Club.
