Obituary
Alice McCarthy, 94 of Spearfish, SD passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at her home.
Alice E. Stewart was born the 4th of 8 children on March 8, 1918 to Rush Clark Stewart and Emma (Winsel) Stewart.
She spent her early years in the Fedora-Artesian, SD area, where she graduated high school. In 1937, she married Jess McCarthy and they made their home in the Fedora-Artesian, SD area. To this union four daughters were born. In 1949, they moved to Huron where they lived for 13 years. In 1962, they moved to Spearfish, SD where they lived their remaining years.
Jess worked at Black Hill State University and Alice worked as a cook, her last job at West Elementary. She enjoyed cooking lunch for the little kids. While living there, they enjoyed many games of cards and activities with dear friends.
She lived for her family and her grandchildren were her treasures. She enjoyed teaching them crafty things and cooking special food for them, especially her caramel rolls and homemade doughnuts. Family was her pride and joy – having only daughters; she always said her sons in law were the sons she never had.
Grateful for having shared her life were her daughters Ruth (Rollie) Mayberry of Vancouver, Washington, Deanna (Frank) Walton of Belle Fourche, SD, Mary (Mike) Morgan of Spearfish, SD; her 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great grandchildren, her brother Bob (Shirley) Stewart of Custer, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents Clark and Emma, husband Jess, daughter Jeanne Gould, grandson Rusty Mayberry, great granddaughter Sarah Murphy, brothers Clyde, Madison, Paul, sisters; Evelyn, Florence, Mabel and many more special friends.
Visitation will be held from 4 - 7 on Thursday, January 17 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 18 at the funeral chapel. Interment will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery.
A memorial to Hospice of the Northern Hills has been established.
