Obituary

Aldo "Al" Panerio, 75, of Spearfish, died peaceably Monday, August 20, at Spearfish Regional Hospital. He was born July 10, 1937 to James and Mary Panerio in Lead, SD. He graduated from Lead High School in 1955, earned a bachelor's degree from the University of South Dakota in 1959, a master's degree from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) in 1961, and pursued a PhD in foreign languages from the University of Minnesota.

Al married Carol Samson of Lead on September 3, 1959. To this union three children were born: James, Ann, and Mary. They resided in Huron, SD from 1961-1985. During those years he taught Spanish, French, and a cooking interim at Huron College. In 1985 he took a position at Black Hills State College where he taught Spanish and English.

After a stroke in 1993, he retired from teaching and made the best efforts to lead a positive and productive life. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends, making them laugh.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Carol, his sister, Florence Kuchta of Yankton, his children Jim (Debbie) Panerio of Aberdeen, Ann Deckert (Tim) of Rapid City, Mary Panerio (Drew Manzer) of Brookings; two grandchildren, Alex and Colin Panerio, nieces and nephews, extended family and friends, a beloved dog, two cats he begrudgingly accepted, and a flock of wild turkeys he couldn't quite get rid of.

Viewing will be from 2:00-5:00 P.M. on Friday, August 24 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral services will be held at All Angels Episcopal Church at 10 A.M. on Saturday, August 25, with Rev. Bunker Hill officiating. A lunch will be served in the church parish hall immediately following the burial at Mt. Lawn Cemetery outside Lead.

A memorial has been established for a language arts scholarship at Black Hills State University.
