Agnes Marcum, 90, of Lead, passed away on May 25, 2011 at Sandstone Manor, Spearfish, SD.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 A.M., Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Black Hills National Cemetary, Sturgis, SD. A memorial has been established.
Agnes was born on June 26, 1920, in Lead, to Chris and Eva (Baltus) Gavins. She lived most of her life in Lead, attending kindergarten and graduating from high school in 1938. She worked two summers as a Homestake guide and also as an usher at the Homestake Theater. She worked as a bookkeeper for Hearst Mercantile Company for a year and a year in the Lawrence County Register of Deeds office. She attended Rapid City School of Business. She then went on to work as secretary for Civil Service for 5 years which included position of Secretary of US Army, Hospital Division, at Fort Meade and Secretary of Hospital Division, Harvard Air Force Base, Harvard, NE. After World War II ended, she transferred back to the Veterans Administration at Fort Meade. She retired as a medical secretary from the Veterans Administration in 1978.
Agnes married Gilbert "Gib" Marcum, August 15,1948 at the Fort Meade Chapel. "Gib" was employed by Black Hills Power & Light. During their 53 years of marriage, they traveled throughout the United States, including Hawaii, Alaska and Mexico via car, plane and camper. After their retirement, they kept busy in the community and in the summer spent time at their 4 acres on Elk Creek near Custer Peak in the Black Hills. Gilbert passed away March 19, 2002.
Agnes was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women's Organization, VFW Auxiliary, NARF, Twin City Senior Citizens, Order of Eastern Star, Fort Meade Historical Society and Lead Women's Club and loved playing cribbage.
Agnes is survived by two nephews, Bob Marcum, Silverton, OR; Harold Marcum, Enterprise, OR; a niece, Maxine Nelson, Alliance, NE; and several cousins. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert; her parents, Chris and Eva Gavins; her brother, Adolf Gavins and her sister-in-law, Dorothy Gavins.
