(August 27, 1941 - August 26, 2013)

Floyd C. (Johnny) Sumners, 71 of Spearfish, SD passed away on August 26th, 2013 at his home.

Johnny was born to Bill and Winifred Sumners on August 27, 1941 in the back seat of a 1938 Ford between White River and Murdo, South Dakota. His mother always said “Johnny on the Spot”. He spent his childhood and early adult life working in and around the White River area, and also worked for Mike and Dola Dreyer of Moser, SD.

He married Marilyn Joy Samuelson on June 5, 1963. To this union two sons were born, Travis while they lived in Gregory and Jason in Spearfish.

Johnny worked a while for Junek’s and also as a truck driver for Alden Ayers before purchasing the Texaco Station in Spearfish in the early 70’s. He and Marilyn ran the station side by side until 1986 at which time they sold it and started Johnny’s Towing and Snow Removal, which they operated together until selling it in 2004.

Johnny was a member of the Spearfish Fire Department and worked closely with the Spearfish Police Department, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s and the South Dakota Highway Patrol offices.

Johnny is survived by his two sons, Travis of Lorton, VA and Jason (Angel) of Spearfish; four sisters: Nadine Tucker of White River, SD, Marge Desport of Covina, CA, Shirley Kuper of Lennox, SD, Goldie Reichardt of Hot Springs, SD; three brothers: Pat (Sharon) and Jimmy of White River and Danny (Oleta) of Williston, ND.; four grandchildren: Cameron of Lorton, VA; Amy, Matthew and Anthony of Spearfish; brother-in-law: Mark Samuelson of Rapid City, SD and sister-in-laws: Linda Sumners of Spearfish; Mary (Samuelson) Ring of North Bend, NE and Karla Noland of Pierre, SD and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn in 2008; brothers: Ike and Jack; sisters: Billie, Evelyn, Myrt and Ida; brother-in-laws: Alvin Tucker, Allen Kuper, Vern Larsen, Jack Desport, Lloyd Reichardt and John (Freddie) Samuelson.

A special thank you goes to the following that made Dad’s last days comfortable by allowing him to stay at home which was his wish: Karla Nolan, Dwain Schulze, Erin Gulledge, Shirley Povandra, Brian Povandra Family, Matthew Noland, Mitch Mechaley, John Niehaus, Ed Furois, Pat Pettit Family, Steve Abernathy Family and Keith Schultz.

Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, August 30, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish with Pastor Scott McKirdy officiating Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals.
